Orthodontic Emergencies What You Need to Know

At McManus Orthodontics, we understand that life doesn’t always go as planned—and sometimes braces or appliances need attention outside of a routine appointment. While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, knowing how to handle unexpected issues can help you stay comfortable and protect your smile.

Common Types of Orthodontic Emergencies

1. Loose or Broken Brackets

Brackets can loosen from biting into hard foods or accidental bumps. If this happens, keep the bracket in place if possible and cover it with orthodontic wax to avoid irritation.

2. Poking Wires

Sometimes wires shift and begin poking the inside of your cheek. Orthodontic wax can help cover the sharp end. If possible, use a clean pair of nail clippers or tweezers to carefully adjust it until you can see us.

3. Lost or Broken Retainer/Aligner

If your retainer or aligner cracks or breaks, contact our office right away. Continuing treatment without the proper appliance can delay progress.

4. Mouth Sores or Irritation

New braces may cause temporary irritation to lips, cheeks, or tongue. Saltwater rinses and orthodontic wax often bring relief.

5. Severe Pain or Injury

True emergencies include facial trauma, a knocked-out tooth, or significant swelling. In these cases, seek urgent care or your general dentist first, then contact our office.

What To Do in the Moment

  • Stay Calm: Most orthodontic issues are not true emergencies.
  • Use Orthodontic Wax: This can provide instant relief from irritation.
  • Rinse with Salt Water: Helps soothe sore spots or minor irritation.
  • Call Our Office: We’ll advise whether you need to come in right away or if it can wait until your next appointment.

Q&A: Orthodontic Emergencies

Q: How do I know if my situation is a true emergency?
A: If you experience severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma that affects your teeth or jaw, it’s an emergency. Otherwise, most issues can be temporarily managed at home until we see you.

Q: What if a bracket falls off completely?
A: Save the bracket if possible and bring it with you. Call us so we can schedule a repair appointment.

Q: My wire is poking my cheek and it’s painful. What should I do?
A: Try using orthodontic wax to cover the wire. If that doesn’t help, you can gently trim the wire with sanitized nail clippers. Then call us to arrange an adjustment.

Q: What if my child swallows a piece of their braces?
A: While uncommon, if your child swallows a small piece of orthodontic material and has difficulty breathing, call 911 immediately. If they are comfortable, let us know and we’ll check everything during your visit.

Q: How can I prevent orthodontic emergencies?
A: Avoid sticky, chewy, and hard foods, wear a mouthguard during sports, and follow instructions for appliances and aligners.
